When cutting and pasting, Word pastes into the wrong open document.

I'm using Word for Mac version 16.54(21101001). I have two open documents. I'm trying to paste copied text (from a scanned PDF) into document 1. However, the pasted text goes into document 2 instead. This continues to happen even when I shift the mouse focus to document 1 by clicking in it before pasting. This also happens when I try to paste text from document 2 into document 1--the pasted text goes into document 2, the original document, instead of document 1, the target document.
The problem goes away once I minimize all Word windows except for the target document. But I never had to do this before.
What is going on?

It happened with the same document opened in two windows, as well as with different documents.
I rebooted in normal mode and it seems as if the problem has resolved itself.
Thanks for your suggestions!

Anonymous 2021-10-26T03:26:48+00:00 Hi Albert, May I know if this is happening with specific two Word documents? I just wanted to confirm if this is happening with the same documents or is happening with any Word document regardless of whether it is new or old. Besides, please try starting your mac in safe mode and check if same thing happens. To know how to start mac in safe mode, see Use safe mode to isolate issues with your Mac ***Disclaimer:*** Microsoft provides no assurances and/or warranties, implied or otherwise, and is not responsible for the information you receive from the third-party linked sites or any support related to technology. If the issue doesn't happen when your Mac is started in safe mode, try restarting without pressing any keys. If the issue doesn't come back, it was probably caused by a cache or directory issue with your startup disk, which safe mode fixed. Also, may I know your macOS version? Let me know the status.
